Greece’s deputy minister of foreign affairs said his country supports Turkey’s membership bid to the European Union, but also said Turkey must understand its obligations to the EU. Dimitris Droutsas said the obligations were particularly related to ongoing territorial disputes. In an interview with Germany’s Frankfurter Allgemeine newspaper outlining the basic principles of Greece's foreign policy on Turkey and the Cyprus issue, Droutsas said the only way to solve the territorial dispute between Greece and Turkey in the Aegean Sea was to discuss the issue at the International Court of Justice in The Hague.
Droutsas said Turkey should also allow Greek Cypriot planes and ships to access the country’s ports and airports. Turkey has so far refused to open its ports and airports to Greek Cypriot vessels, with Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu reiterating that Turkey will not change its position until there is an agreement in place to reunify war-divided Cyprus.
