The Supreme Military Council, or YAŞ, convened Friday at the General Staff’s headquarters under the leadership of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. Erdoğan was welcomed by Chief of General Staff Gen. İlker Başbuğ during a ceremony upon his arrival. Defense Minister Vecdi Gönül and top commanders also attended the meeting, whose agenda included personnel, training and disciplinary issues, as well as the scheduled activities of the Turkish Armed Forces. Before the meeting, members of the press were permitted a brief opportunity to take photos and videos.
The council members later visited the mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, founder of the Turkish Republic, and attended a luncheon given by President Abdullah Gül.
The decisions made at YAŞ will be submitted to the president for approval and then made public by the General Secretariat of the General Staff. YAŞ’ statement had not yet been released when the Hürriyet Daily News & Economic Review went to print late Friday.
