A day before the first anniversary of his death, the former president of the Republic of Cyprus, Papadopoulos’ tomb was raided for assumed political purposes. The removal of Tassos Papadopoulos’ corpse, whom passed away last year in Cyprus, from the grave where he was buried in the Deftera cemetery, has resulted in widespread shock.
As ceremonies were scheduled for today to commemorate Papadopoulos on the first anniversary of his death, the fact that just a day ago his body was stolen from his grave, has resulted in outrage throughout the nation.
One of Papadopoulos’ former security detail members went to his grave last night to light the lamp on his grave, which he does every day, when he realized the grave had been desecrated. When police forces arrived to the scene, they verified that the grave had indeed been dug up and the coffin was missing. It has not yet been determined who stole the body or why they did so.
Current President of the Republic of Cyprus, Dimitris Christofias, who is currently in Brussels for an EU summit, called on the Cypriot public to act with common sense. Initial suspicion is leaning towards the notion that Popodopoulos’ body was exhumed for political purposes. Some are speculating that the act may have been intended as a warning to Christofias, who is supportive of reaching a solution to the Cyprus problem, by sympathizers of Popodopoulos, who was well-known for constantly challenging the issue.
